The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has joined a federal investigation into the New York Police Department’s (NYPD) nightclub enforcement practices, according to sources. The investigation focuses on whether the NYPD has been accepting bribes or kickbacks from nightclub owners in exchange for looking the other way on violations of state liquor laws. The NYPD’s enforcement unit, the Vice Squad, has been under scrutiny since a report by the New York Times last year revealed that officers were accepting free meals and drinks from nightclub owners. The IRS is now reportedly looking into possible tax evasion schemes related to these transactions.
