The U.S. Transportation Department has given its approval for Alaska Airlines to acquire Hawaiian Airlines, creating a major West Coast carrier. The merger, which still needs approval from regulators in Hawaii and Alaska, would combine the two airlines’ routes and create a larger competitor to industry leaders Delta and American Airlines.
