California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed two bills into law that aim to protect the digital likeness of performers. The first bill, AB 5, expands the definition of ‘name or likeness’ to include a person’s voice, image, or digital representation. The second bill, AB 171, creates a private right of action for violations of this new law. These bills follow similar legislation in other states and come as deepfakes and other forms of digital manipulation become more prevalent.
