The National Park Service has approved a proposal to restore the original name, Kuwahi, to Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The name change was made in the late 1800s to honor former Tennessee Governor William Blount Clingman, but the original Cherokee name, Kuwahi, meaning ‘place of the gods,’ is being reinstated.
