A Cornell University graduate student, who faced deportation after participating in a pro-Palestinian protest in New York City, has been granted a reprieve. The student, identified as Mohammad Awad, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in August for allegedly throwing a water bottle during a demonstration. Awad, who is from Jerusalem and has been studying in the US since 2013, was granted a stay of removal by an immigration judge on October 10. His lawyers argued that his deportation would put him in danger due to his Palestinian nationality and his involvement in activism. The decision comes amid growing concerns over increased ICE enforcement against activists and immigrants.
