Alex Salmond, the former First Minister of Scotland and leader of the Scottish National Party, has died at the age of 65. The cause of death is not yet known. Salmond served as First Minister from 2007 to 2014 and led the SNP to a landslide victory in the 2011 Scottish Parliament elections. He resigned from the position in 2014 following an inquiry into Scottish Government policy on the renewable energy sector. Salmond had been due to stand trial in March 2020 on 14 charges of sexual assault and attempted rape, but the trial was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
