U.S. stocks advanced on Friday, with the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average both gaining more than 1%. Investors were digesting a busy week of earnings reports and economic data. The report showed that the cost of energy and food continued to rise, but the increase was smaller than in July.
