New York City Council Votes to Study Reparations for Descendants of Slaves

The New York City Council voted on Thursday to approve a plan to study the impact of slavery on the city and consider reparations for the descendants of enslaved Africans. The non-binding resolution, which passed with a vote of 41 to 5, calls for the creation of a commission to research the city’s role in the transatlantic slave trade and the effects of slavery on Black New Yorkers. The commission would also explore potential reparations, including financial compensation and other forms of redress.
