Russia proposed an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Thursday to discuss the situation in Gaza, where clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian worshippers at a Jerusalem holy site have fueled renewed violence. The proposal came as the United States, a close ally of Israel, expressed support for Israeli actions against Palestinian stone-throwers at the site, known to Muslims as the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and to Jews as the Temple Mount. Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia called for a summit of the Middle East Quartet – the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations – to address the crisis.
