September Consumer Confidence Takes Biggest Hit in Three Years

Consumer confidence in the U.S. dropped in September by the most since the start of the pandemic, according to a report from the Conference Board. The Consumer Confidence Index fell to 108.4 from a revised 113.7 in August. The present situation index, based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions, decreased to 147.7 from 156.5. The expectations index, based on consumers’ optimism about the short-term future, declined to 89.6 from 91.1.
