The Long Winding Road That Brought Luke Weaver to Yankees Closer Role

Luke Weaver’s journey to the New York Yankees closer role was filled with twists and turns. Weaver, a former top prospect with the St. Louis Cardinals, was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2017. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019 and missed the entire 2020 season. The Yankees acquired him from the Diamondbacks in July 2021 in a deal for infielder Josh Rojas. Weaver made his Yankees debut on September 1, 2021, and pitched well in his final appearances of the season. He earned the closer role in spring training this year, but has struggled with consistency. Weaver has 11 saves and a 4.35 ERA in 2023.
