A Tibetan monk was sentenced to 18 months in prison for sharing teachings of the Dalai Lama on WeChat, according to news reports. The monk, identified as Tenzin Choedrak, was arrested in March 2024 and charged with ‘inciting subversion of state power’ and ‘spreading rumors’. His sentencing comes amidst increasing crackdowns on religious freedom in Tibet. The Chinese government considers the Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in India, to be a separatist and has long banned his teachings.
