US Consumer Confidence Falls Most in Three Years on Labor Views

The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index decreased in September, dropping to 95.7 from a revised 103.2 in August. The present situation index, based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions, decreased to 111.6 from 118.7. The expectations index, based on consumers’ optimism about the short-term future, decreased to 89.4 from 97.6. Consumers’ assessment of the labor market was the primary driver of the decline, with the percentage of consumers stating jobs are hard to get increasing to 24.3% from 22.6%.
